JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Volunteerism and school spirit are two terms that best describe this week's Carson-Newman University's "Best of the Class".
Jefferson County High School senior Ashley Creech has made the most of her high school experience, from receiving top honors academically to spreading school spirit both on and off the field and hardwood. But her passion seems to lie with a small team of specially gifted performers, appropriately dubbed The Sunshine Ambassadors.
"It's just a special needs organization for kids with special needs and we teach them dances, mostly simple dances to help with their coordination and to prevent weight gain, to just help them with their weight," Ashley says.
Classmate Matthew Rogers has his own list of impressive accolades, but it's what he wants to do after high school that makes him best in his class. The future Vanderbilt student has aspirations to work within the United States government's Antiterrorism Cryptology Department. He also says his days of high school are far from over, with hopes to return to the classroom as a math teacher to inspire the next generation of high school students.
"High school's not what you think, it what you make of it," Matthew says. "I mean you hear that all the time, what you put in is what you get out. It can be, if you try, that most amazing time of your life. I still remember coming in as a freshman; it seems unreal that I am graduating in a few months, but definitely do whatever you can in high school to be focused, but also have a good time and don't stress yourself out too much."
Congratulations, Ashley Creech and Matthew Rodgers for being this week's, Carson Newman University's "Best of the Class".
