When John Lennon was gunned down in front of his New York City apartment building 30 years ago this week, there were no breaking news alerts on any 24 hour news channel..,only because there were no 24 hour news channels.  So, the responsibility of telling the world about the tragic news went to....Howard Cosell?

Cosell was a brash, big mouth, tv sports broadcaster that you either loved or hated.  This particular night, he and Frank Gifford were calling the Monday Night Football game, when ABC News confirmed Lennon had been shot and killed.  I love "behind the scenes" recordings and now there is one surfacing in which Cosell was not sure if the football broadcast was the appropriate place to deliver the news about Lennon.  Frank Gifford convinced him otherwise.  You can read a transcription of the audio in the "descriptions" portion of the video.

Following that off the air conversation, Cosell told the football audience that John Lennon was dead.  There really is no easy or appropriate way to combine the death of an international super star, with a football game.  But Cosell and Gifford did it about as well as possible.  And it almost didn't happen at all.
