Southern Appalachian Studies Series: Stories from Cemeteries of the Smokies

 Thursday, December 7, 6 p.m., “Southern Appalachian Studies Series: Stories from Cemeteries of the Smokies. Author, Gail Palmer, Ph.D., will tell some of the story behind the publication of “Cemeteries of the Smokies” and will relate stories about some of the people who lived there before formation of the Park, and who are buried there. A Blount County native, Dr. Palmer’s connection to the Park is through her mother, Mary Sparks Palmer, related to the Sparks’ families of Cades Cove. Light refreshments will be served. This Appalachian Studies program is in conjunction with Southland Books of Maryville and will be in Dorothy Herron Rooms A & B.

Pre-Owned Book Sale (Members Only)

Thursday, December 7, 12 noon until 6 p.m. “Members Only Sale,” an opportunity for FOL members to purchase books before other members of the public are admitted to the sale. FOL memberships are available at the elevator doors, before accessing the Library lower level.
o Continues Friday and Saturday, December 8 & 9 (Opened to Public) 9am-5pm, “Pre-Owned Book Sale,” fundraiser for the library where more than 50,000 books are available—$1 for soft cover and $2.50 for hard cover, plus movies (DVD & VHS), audiobooks and specially priced rare books, collectibles and others--by the Friends of the Blount County Public Library (FOL).

Celebrate the Season is 4:30-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, at Farragut Town Hall. Photos with Santa are 4:30-6:00 p.m., and musical entertainment includes the Farragut High School Madrigal Singers, the Farragut Middle School Chorus and the Bearden United Methodist Church Children’s Bell Choir. (Children in the audience can take a turn on the bells, too!) Other activities include cookie decorating, a craft and Farragut Museum tours.

Tis the season to be tacky! Join Goodwill at Bearden Beer Market for our festive and fantastic ugly sweater crafting workshop! Create your very own tacky Christmas sweater while enjoying a wide selection of beer and great company!

Goodwill will provide all the supplies you need to bedazzle and bedeck your custom sweater. Your registration includes a sweater in your size and everything you need to make it the shiniest, jingliest, tackiest and most festive sweater at your next Christmas party.

Children are welcome at this event, though we do suggest that an adult be present to help attach decorations to the sweaters. Dogs welcome!

After you create your masterpiece, be sure to enter Goodwill’s annual “Share Your Sweater” contest for the chance to win a Goodwill shopping spree! Details at www.gwiktn.org/shareyoursweater.

To make the deal even sweeter, Bearden Beer Market is donating $1 from every beer sold at this event to Goodwill. Proceeds from this event support Goodwill’s vocational training programs and employment services for individuals with barriers to employment, helping to build Knoxville into a stronger community. Knoxville Holiday Canstruction presented by Messer Construction Co.

Knoxville Holiday Canstruction is a creative and fun art exhibition with a serious purpose – fighting hunger. For the fifth year in a row, local companies will team up to design and construct large holiday-themed art sculptures made up of canned food items, which are placed on public display at the Knoxville Convention Center for families to visit throughout the holiday season. So far, Knoxville Holiday Canstruction has donated more than 110,000 canned food items to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee and plans to exceed those goals in its fifth year.
