A look back at the Super Tornado Outbreak of 2011

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- April 27th is a date that will always remind me of tornadoes. Your Local 8 Weather team was busy all day as severe storms moved in that morning of 2011 and then more severe storms started redeveloping that afternoon and on into the evening hours.

Growing up here, I also found this tornado outbreak opened a lot of eyes to the fact that yes, tornadoes can happen in the mountains.

On April 27th 2011 there were 57 tornadoes across East Tennessee, with a few crossing into Southwest Virginia. These tornadoes killed 34 people and injured around 300! We have a several long-track tornadoes that impacted several counties, especially in Southern East Tennessee.

This outbreak began with the first wave of severe thunderstorms that moved across middle Tennessee and northern Alabama in the early morning hours of April 27, 2011. These storms continued into east Tennessee before weakening in central east Tennessee.

More storms developed throughout the afternoon and on into the later hours of the day.
