33 residents displaced after Bell Walker Crossing Apartments fire

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Knoxville Fire Department worked an apartment fire in West Knoxville on Wednesday.

Crews were dispatched to Bell Walker's Crossing Apartments on Block House Way in the Walker Springs area at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

About half of a 24-unit building caught on fire, according to KFD Captain D.J. Corcoran. It's a three-story building, and all residents were evacuated.

KFD Captain DJ Corcoran said 33 residents will be displaced and assisted by the Red Cross.

KFD has called the fire a 2 alarm fire. The KFD Captain told Local 8 News on Thursday that the fire appears to be accidental in nature, no foul play is suspected.

911 dispatchers were initially made aware of the fire by a maintenance worker who detected the flames on the third floor balcony. KFD said the maintenance worker tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher before calling 911.

Firefighters said they were able to preserve at least one-third of the building .

The cause of the fire is being investigated. No inspections are planned at this time.
