KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Knoxville police responded to a report of a shooting in progress in East Knoxville Saturday.
Investigators said two vehicles were involved in the shooting in the 300 block of Meadow View Road.
One of the vehicles fled the scene before police arrived, and the other crashed into a tree close to the scene of the shooting, according to police.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found an Audi A6 that had crashed into a tree in front of 305 Meadow View Road.
A passenger in the vehicle was identified by police as Danielle Harris. The driver was identified as Jerome Locke.
"I didn't know nothing," said Sheila Tillery, Jerome's mom. "I didn't know nothing until I got here that my baby was gone," she continued.
Harris had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was transported to UT Medical Center with not life threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation says Locke and Harris were inside the vehicle when a second vehicle pulled alongside of them before gunshots were fired. Police said Locke was struck more than one time.
"I just thank God that he gave me 27 years with my baby," said Tillery. "I know all our days are numbered, but I thank God for those 27 years; that was my baby," Tillery added.
Officers said Locke inadvertently accelerated down the hill before the vehicle crashed into a tree. Locke was found dead on the scene.
"We was real brothers," said Terrel Kemp, Jerome's childhood friend. "I can't believe it, it's not real," he added.
A Knoxville Police spokesperson told Local 8 News, "The shooting appears to be related to a previous confrontation. The investigation is continuing."
"God got him," said Tillery. "I know he's gone home to be with the Lord, I know," she continued.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the Knoxville Police Department at 865-215-7212.
