KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Tennessee Department of Transportation said I-40 East at mile marker 7 in North Carolina is expected to be closed for hours due to a liquid asphalt spill.
The road is expected to reopen by 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.
To make a detour around the area, take exit 7 for Cold Springs Creek/Harmon Den Road, and cross over to Cold Springs Creek/Harmon Den Road and merge left for reaccess to I-40 East.
Traffic is causing delays in Tennessee. As of Friday evening, TDOT official Mark Nagi said traffic was backing up as far as three miles from the spill.
