Knox County Schools implement first elementary theater program at Beaumont Magnet Academy

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)- An introduction to the arts, a brand new way to learn and the first of its kind here in Knox County.

Teachers at Beaumont Magnet Academy are turning the classroom into a theater.

"I think the arts are a crucial part of elementary school," said Amanda Taylor, theater teacher at BMA.

Now the arts will be a part of the curriculum for students K-5th grade. It's the only elementary school in Knox County to have this program.

"It kind of came out organically because we had two years of a theater club here that had been very successful and saw the need for a theater program," said Principal Windy Clayton.

Educators are hoping this will help students inside and outside the classroom.

"I think the arts are important. I think they help students develop empathy for one another in the world. I think it causes students to put themselves in somebody else's shoes and so it gives them a different perspective on life," said Taylor.

The class will include plays and musicals just like the middle and high schools do now and hopefully draw more students to the elementary school.

"It's a great opportunity for students to learn self esteem and self expression," said Clayton.

"I want parents to be excited because I think it's going to open a whole new world to Knox County Schools," said Taylor.

The school starts class on August 8th.
