KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The college radio station at the University of Tennessee is considered one of the top ten best in the country.
WUTK Volunteer Radio 90.3 The Rock, the University of Tennessee’s campus student radio station and learning lab in Knoxville was just named the sixth best College Campus Radio Station according to ValueColleges.com.
valuecolleges.com remarked that WUTK does a great job with music programming.
"You come to college to expand your boundaries in a lot of different ways and we're gonna help you musically expand those boundaries, but the most important thing we do is allow these journalism and electronic media majors and other communication majors at UT to get some valueable experience in the world of broadcast music industry and sports media," said General manager Benny Smith.
The thirty-four year old, self-supported radio station and lab for over 200 UT students each year is ranked along such notable college radio stations such as WKDU at Drexel University, University of Washington’s KEXP, and University of California-Berkeley’s KALX. ValueColleges.com described The Rock’s eclectic programming mix of “cutting edge up and coming bands, techno, rap, electronica, rock-a-billy, punk, and old school rock and roll favorites appeals to a wide audience, and provides a very pleasurable listener experience that spans many decades and genres.”
WUTK has won several local and national accolades and awards in the past, and boasts many alumni who continue to have very successful careers in professional broadcasting.
WUTK receives no day-to-day funding from UT or The School of Journalism and Electronic Media. The station serves as a learning lab mainly for students from the School of JEM, and depends on funding from business who underwrite and sponsor programming, as well as listener donations, and fund raisers. WUTK will be celebrating National College Radio Day Friday, November 4, soliciting listener donations all day. The 4th Annual WUTK Beer Dinner at Sunspot Restaurant is Monday, November 7, sponsored by Yee Haw Brewing, and tickets are $45 each, with all proceeds benefitting WUTK.
