Local 8 News to hand out NASA approved eclipse viewing glasses

(WVLT) -- The Local 8 News Team will be handing out NASA approved solar eclipse viewing glasses at the following select locations in August.

On August 15, WVLT will be handing out glasses at Sun Tan City in Alcoa from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m or while supplies last. Also, because supplies are limited, only two pairs will be given per car. The address is 1058 Hunters Crossing in Alcoa.

On August 16, the news team will be next door to Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor and Haun at Witt Building Material located at 1242 E. Weisgarber Road in Knoxville to hand out glasses to the public from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. or while supplies last. Because supplies are limited, only two pairs will be given per car.

Beginning August 15, Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor and Haun will have a limited supply of glasses at its five area locations. Those are in Farragut, Maryville, Eyecare Optical in Fountain City and Eyecare Optical in Sevierville as well as the main office on Weisgarber Road.

Sun Tan City will also have a limited supply of glasses at its seven area locations. They are located in Bearden, Fountain City, Powell, Turkey Creek, West Town Mall, Maryville and Oak Ridge.

Solar eclipse glasses should be worn before and after the total eclipse. Do not forget to put on eclipse glasses before looking at the sun. The eclipse glasses should be inspected for any damage or scratches before use.

The limited number of eclipse glasses provided by Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor, and Haun, WVLT-TV (Gray Television), and Sun Tan City, are NASA Certified, conform to and meet The Transmission Requirements of ISO 12312-2, Filters for Direct Observation of the Sun, Meet the transmission requirements of EN 1836:2005 + A1:2007 € for an E15 Filter for the Direct Observation of the Sun, Meets the Transmission requirements of AS/NZS 1338. 1:2012, Filters for Eye Protectors.

If you choose to use the glasses provided by our station partners, you must follow the directions printed on the glasses for safe usage.
