Why is fog common here?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Chelsea asked why is fog common in our area.

You’ll hear it often in the mornings about patchy fog. There are some weather scenarios that make it more likely.

After rain, when the weather starts clearing, you’ll find areas of fog develop from the increased moisture in the air. It’s extremely humid and that moisture has to go somewhere, so it lifts and turns into fog.

Fog will also form along mountainsides for this reason. The moist air will lift and form that low-lying cloud cover.

So now that you know moisture is the source, we have a lot of bodies of water in our area. From the rivers, creeks, and lakes a clear, calm night and that moist air will rise, and then drift on land in many cases.
