Keep thieves off your porch this Christmas

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The United States Postal Service expects to deliver more than 15 billion pieces of holiday mail between now and Dec. 31. Unfortunately, that means porch pirates will be on the lookout for unattended packages that may wind up on your porch.

Luckily, however, there are some apps that were designed to have your back this holiday season:

1. Nextdoor
Keep track of what's happening in your neighborhood by using the Nextdoor app. Chat with your neighbors about picking up a package that was delivered to your house, report any suspicious activity you observe and share surveillance footage with those who live near you.

Nextdoor reports 43 percent of neighbors have had at least one package stolen, and more than 40 percent of neighbors have experienced multiple packages taken from their doorsteps. Sixty-one percent of users said they did not order an item online because they were afraid it would be stolen from their home. During the holiday months, the app shows a 515 percent increase about posts regarding stolen or missing packages.

2. Ring
The Ring doorbell security system helps you keep an eye on your front door while you're not home. Answer the door from anywhere just by downloading and using the app on your smartphone or tablet.

3. Package Guard
Get real-time alerts to your smartphone or mobile device by using Package Guard, which will let you know the moment a package is taken from your front door. The device detects when a package is delivered and can sense when packages are moved or stolen.
