Latest Graduation Success Rate Data Reveals Several Big Orange Bright Spots

Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT)-- The NCAA on Wednesday announced Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rate data for the 2007-10 cohort for all Division I institutions as part of the annual NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program.

This year's Tennessee-specific data revealed an overall single-year GSR of 88 percent—the highest in UT history. Tennessee's multi-year GSR stands at 85 percent, which is also a school record.

Since 2012, only one Southeastern Conference institution has experienced more improvement in its multi-year GSR than Tennessee, which has seen its GSR rise 12 percentage points during that span.

This latest GSR data release marks the third consecutive year in which Tennessee posted a multi-year rate of at least 80 percent (after never reaching the 80-percent mark prior to this current three-year streak). This is the fifth straight year in which Tennessee's multi-year GSR has improved.

"Graduating our student-athletes is the foundation of our mission," Tennessee Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics John Currie said. "I'm thrilled to see the progress we continue to make in our graduation success rate, which is a credit to the commitment our student-athletes have made to their academic endeavors. It's also a credit to the culture of achievement and outstanding support of our Thornton Center staff under the direction of Dr. Joe Scogin as well as the expectations of our coaches."

Nine out of 14 Tennessee sports* posted perfect 100 percent GSRs, and six teams—men's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's golf, rowing and volleyball—led or tied for the SEC lead by posting perfect multi-year GSRs.

Nine sports also set or matched their program-high multi-year GSR, including the six aforementioned sports and football, men's basketball and baseball. And 13 Tennessee sports saw their multi-year rate improve from a year ago.

A key focus for Tennessee Athletics is to graduate student-athletes and prepare them for real-world experiences. In fact, graduation is a key component of UTAD's No. 1 mission goal of providing a world-class student-athlete experience.

In 2001, the University of Tennessee opened the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center to provide student-athletes with superior academic support programs and personal and career development assistance.

*Tennessee sponsors 20 varsity sports. For its GSR calculation, the NCAA does not separate cross country or indoor/outdoor track (it just publishes one GSR each for men's track and women's track). Additionally, Tennessee's men's tennis and volleyball programs did not have student-athletes in this year's GSR cohort data.
