The 2017 Blue Cross Bowl is underway at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. In Class-1A it was Greenback defeating Cornersville 42-21 to capture it's first state championship since 1987. Congratulations to coach Greg Ryan and the Cherokees.
In Class-3A, it was mighty Alcoa gunning for it's 16th state title and they get it with a 31-20 win over Covington. Gary Rankin has coached in 19 state title games and is now 13-6 in those contests including having won the last three in a row at Alcoa.
In the Class-5A Championship tilt it was Knoxville catholic scoring early and often on their way to a convincing 45-28 win over previously unbeaten Beech. The Irish close out the season with 9 straight wins. This is the program's third state title in three different classifications.
Congratulations to coach Steve Matthews and the fighting Irish as East Tennessee makes is clean sweep on Thursday in Cookeville.
The action continued on Friday with both the Class4-A and Class-6A Championships.
Greeneville was first to take on Springfield and the Green Devil offense worked from the start. Quarterback Cade Ballard led his squad to a 4-A state title, 54-13.
Next, it was coach Derek Hunt and Maryville's turn for the Class 6-A title. The Red Rebels started early, and had a 28-0 lead at the half against Cane Ridge. With seconds left in the game Cane Ridge was able to score, but Maryville got the big win 42-7 for the program's 16th state championship, his first as Red Rebels head coach. Hunt won three state titles during his time as Maryville's quarterback.
