Our countdown begins in Cookeville where 5 area teams captured state football titles, the most since the TSSAA expanded beyond three classes. It was Greenback , Alcoa, Catholic, Greeneville and Maryville flexing some East Tennessee muscle.

7. JOHN CURRIE FIRED AS UT AD
Our 7th most significant story happened just 8 months after it started. The hire of John Currie as Dave Hart's replacement would be short lived with Currie's first football season as UTAD being his last.

6. REINSTATEMENT OF THE LADY VOLS LOGO
One of the highlights of Currie's short tenure would be the reinstatement of the Lady Vols logo. A move welcomed by Lady Vol athletes past and present:

5. GRUMORS
Our 5th most intriguing sports story of 2017 involved a notion of fiction which took on a life of it's own...GRUMORS! The Rumors of Jon Gruden becoming UT's next head coach would remain a constant reminder of a coach search gone wild!

4. BUTCH JONES FIRED
Giving life to the Grumors during A dark time in UT football history would be the firing of head coach Butch Jones. A disastrous finish in Gainesville would set the stage for a winless record in SEC play. Butch would finish with a 34-27 record at Tennessee, several bricks shy of completing his 5th season on 'OL Rocky Top!

3. PHILLIP FULMER HIRED AS UT AD
One of the more amazing moments of 2017 happened 9 years after one of the more difficult moments in Tennessee athletics history, the hiring of Phillip Fulmer as UTAD. He replaces the man who was part of the regime which fired him back in 2008. An energized Fulmer....just what an ailing program needed at the right time.

2. THE UT FOOTBALL COACH SEARCH
Our number two most memorable moment would last better than three weeks... the craziness that was the UT football coach search, a search which went to a new level with what turned out to be the Greg Schiano Fiasco. A Campus protest and social media outrage would send the Tennessee faithful into a tailspin.

1. JEREMY PRUITT NAMED UT HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
The hope would return for Vol Nation with the hiring of Jeremy Pruitt... The 26th head coach in UT Football history is our biggest Sports story of the year and a story the Tennessee fan base is banking on getting better with each year to come!
