8-year sentence for fatal crash into apartment

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (AP) -- An East Tennessee woman who pleaded guilty to crashing a pickup truck into an apartment, killing a 71-year-old man in his bed, apologized to the victim's family before being sentenced to eight years in jail.

Twenty-five-year-old Ashley Dawn Langworthy of Jonesborough tearfully apologized Monday at her sentencing in Washington County.

The Johnson City Press reported that Glenn Edward Smith's oldest son, James Smith, told the judge his father would have forgiven Langworthy. He said he wanted to see Langworthy pay but not be destroyed.

Langworthy pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide.

Records show she had a blood alcohol content of 0.18 after drinking two margaritas, three shots of tequila and two other alcoholic beverages. The presumed intoxication level is 0.08.

The judge allowed Langworthy to remain free until Dec. 26.
