KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A man is wanted for questioning in the murder of John Smith, who was gunned down Sunday at his apartment on Dutch Valley Drive.

Police released a picture and are asking for the public's help identifying him.

When Smith's family was shown the picture, none recognized the man.

"I'm thinking, did my brother even communicate with this guy?" Smith's sister Nikki asked.

Smith's cousin, Eva Johnson, remembered John as the clown of the family and the one who would make everyone laugh.

"John was a jokster. He loved to laugh. He loved to make jokes. He was a comedian," Johnson said.

Johnson and several residents at the Dutch Valley Apartment complex said they had no idea who the man is in the picture that KPD released. But they're hopeful that someone will recognize him and come forward with some information.

"Every night I go to bed and I have a headache and can't sleep and get up and ride around because I'm just still wondering, who did this to my baby brother," Nikki said.

If you know where he is, call KPD's crime information line at 215-7212. Callers can remain anonymous.

A candle light vigil has been set for John E. Smith. Police found 34-year-old dead at his apartment, 919 Dutch Valley Drive. The vigil will be held in front of his apartment.

Neighbors told Local 8 News Smith was shot in front of his daughter.

"I heard about five firecracker sounds but it almost sound loud enough to be gunshots and it was screaming right after it," said Michaela Austin.

"I couldn't imagine my kid's going through that my heart goes out to that little girl," said a neighbor who lives nearby.

Police say the shooting was over drugs. Police say Smith has a criminal past including weapons, theft and drug charges. They're still looking for a suspect.
