Arrest made in beating death of elderly store owner

CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) --There’s a break in a months old murder case today. Claiborne County deputies arrested a man in connection with the beating death of Harvey Fuson. They picked up 33-year-old Donnie Smith of Kentucky for killing Fuson back in January.

Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray announced the arrest Wednesday afternoon, “Claiborne County grand jury returned an indictment on Donnie Smith, age 33 with murder.”

Police found Fuson's body inside his Cumberland Gap antique shop in January. Federal, state, and local authorities worked the case, even suspecting Efrain Martinez's two grandsons. “Police questioned them and suspected that they might be involved,” he said.

Martinez says he doesn’t know Smith but hopes the arrest takes the heat off his grandkids. "And I'm glad the case is clear either way, you know. I don't like to see nobody killed for no reason."

Investigators aren’t saying what, if any, motive Smith had but the sheriff confirms Smith and Fuson knew each other.
