Autopsy: inmate died in jail of drug overdose

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities in Sevier County say an autopsy has found a jail inmate died of a painkiller overdose.

Derek Lee Pitts was pronounced dead on Feb. 4 after being taken to a Knoxville hospital when he was found unresponsive in a cell at the Sevier County Jail.

A medical examiner's report cited by The Mountain Press states Pitts had Hydrocodone in his blood and a blue granular material consistent with use of the drug was found in his nose.

Sevier County deputies had arrested him the day before his death. Among charges on which Pitts was being held were a fourth DUI count and felony evading arrest.

Pitts' son, Erik Pitts, says he has hired a lawyer and wants a second autopsy of his father's body.
