Chattanooga man gets 7 years in hit-and-run case

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- A judge has sentenced a Chattanooga man to seven years in prison in a fatal hit-and-run case.

Jeremy Lane was sentenced Monday. A jury convicted him March 4 on vehicular homicide and other charges in the Dec. 23, 2009, hit-and-run death of Susan Wood as she was arriving at her downtown workplace.

Witnesses said Lane did not stop after he struck Wood. He hid his 1995 Nissan sports car at an apartment complex and then concocted a fake story about being carjacked.

Prosecution witnesses said Lane had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana at an after-hours party at the Chattanooga Billiards Club where he worked.

Defense attorney Dan Ripper after the sentencing described the punishment as "justified." Ripper said Lane has been in custody since January 2010.
