Crimetracker: Arrest made in Blount County armed robbery

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Blount County Sheriff's Office said it has arrested the man who robbed Ian's Market on Christmas Eve.

Micah Lee Sherwood, 24, of Maryville is charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Officers say Sherwood walked into the market early Tuesday, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money.

Sherwood is currently serving parole from a conviction for attempted robbery in 2011.

He's expected to appear Blount County General Sessions Court on January 8.

Ramess Patel has been working at Ian's Market for just about a year. But Tuesday morning, he got the scare of his life when a man rushed in demanding cash.

"He yelled, 'Money, money, money!' And made me open the register," said Patel.

Patel said the masked man had a gun on him the whole time.

"Gun - in my head, and second time here," said Patel.

He took cash, but that's not all. The robber stuffed 35 cartons of cigarettes into bags and then grabbed about $1,000 worth of lottery tickets before taking off.

Robert Shumate is a regular customer and can't believe what happened.

"Whoever's done it, I hope they turn themselves in or get caught - it's the wrong time of year and people are working too hard for their money for someone to come and just take it," said Shumate.

Shumate said he thinks someone local is responsible.

"This is kind of a close knit unit here, where most people know each other. And I'm sure it was someone that was in this area," said Shumate.

Blount County investigators were back Friday to ask more questions and take a closer look at the type of lottery tickets the robber made off with. And although Patel is scared, he said he won't quit because he loves his job.

"The people are nice, the town people. They're my customers," said Patel.

Deputies said the suspect is about 5'10''. He has a stocky build and was last seen wearing a black mask, black and grey striped sweatshirt, black pans and tennis shoes.
