KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Spiller family is still shaken up, trying to understand why three men forced their way inside their home Tuesday night.
"It's scary, it's just scary to know that my daughter is afraid to be alone," said Karena Spiller.
It started as a shots fired call around 9:30 p.m. near Fairfield Street.
As police patrolled the area, Karena Spiller ran up to them, saying her husband had just called her at work because three men had forced their way inside their Barton Street home.
Spiller said her daughter told her the men knocked on the door:
"And they asked my daughter a question and she's like, 'Huh?' And then the other guy just comes on the porch and has the gun like this and she just backs up and has the door open, you know?' said Spiller.
"The guy came up on the porch with the gun aimed at my daughter - so I just backed up and let them come in. And they laid us down on the floor right here," said Jason Spiller.
The men demanded cash. When Spiller handed over about $200, one of them hit him on the head with his gun. Then they ran out, firing gun shots before leaving. The Spiller's four-year-old grandson was hiding in the bathroom the entire time.
"We don't know why people do things. We don't know why people just do random home invasions when there are children in the house," said Karena Spiller.
But they have a theory: they think the men were looking for someone else because one of them said, "This is the wrong place."
They're scared to live there now, but the Spillers have a plan:
"I told my daughter that we need to take a self-defense course, we need to go to the range, we need to learn how to shoot a gun - even get an anger management class. And we need to be licensed to carry a concealed weapon," said Karena Spiller.
Police are still searching for the intruders.
