MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Two sisters in Maryville have been charged with child abuse and neglect after showing up to Blount Memorial Hospital with a 5-year-old child early Christmas morning.
McKenna Verhulst, 22, is the the child's mother and has been charged with child neglect. Rachel Davis, 19, is charged with child abuse.
Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp told Local 8 News that police were called to the hospital early Christmas morning after Verhulst showed up to the hospital with the child.
Chief Crisp says Davis was looking after the child. But she told officers Verhulst had not checked on the child in more than month.
Crisp said Verhulst noticed the child had bruises on his face when she went to pick up the child. And during the investigation determined Davis had slapped the child in the face.
The 5-month-old has been released from the hospital and is in state custody along with Verhulst's 3-year-old son.
Chief Crisp could not say if Verhulst and Davis were still in jail as of Friday afternoon.
