Hundreds of cars travel on Maynardville Highway each day, but there's one driver folks won't forget.
"A backhoe riding down the highway with a shirtless driver," said Tony Markham. "Not only was the guy shirtless, but the only thing he had on were his socks."
Markham said he was on his way to work just before 7:30 a.m. Sunday when he noticed the unusual incident.
"I passed a landscaping company that had a gate busted open. I figured there was something fishy so I called 911," Markham said.
Authorities said Joseph Hall, 19, was naked and drunk when they busted him for reportedly stealing a backhoe and rolling out of "Out On a Limb Nursery."
"What we were told was that he had his clothes off at the very back lot and he was just trying to take cover when he realized he was naked," said Kim Smith who is one of the owners of the family business.
Smith and others in the community laughed at the nature of the theft. But that was only after the equipment was recovered.
"I'm thankful we got it back because that's our livelihood. We work hard for our things and want to keep them," she said.
All thanks to the help of a Good Samaritan, who put a stop to it.
"I would hope someone would be helping me watch out for my business if something like that were to happen as well," Markam said.
"I kind of feel bad for the guy and his family. That's very embarassing," Smith said.
Hall's brother told Local 8 News Joseph Hall doesn't remember anything. He said he was just trying to get home.
Hall faces several charges including theft, public intoxication and indecent exposure.
