KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Back in November, Velder Humphrey's grandson, Rodney Miller, was shot and killed during an attempted robbery on South Kyle Street in the Walter P. housing complex. Humphrey said Miller was a good, caring man who always checked in on her.

"He called me Grams all the time. And he'd come and we'd sit down and talk and I'd tell him how I wanted him to be good, you know, stay out of trouble and not get into anything and watch his friends. But he didn't watch them like I told them," said Humphrey.

Shortly after the murder, police identified Kenneth Washington - one of Miller's friends - as the suspect. But for months, they couldn't find him.

Then officers got a tip that Washington was on his way back to Knoxville from Louisiana on a Greyhound bus. They arrested him as he stepped off the bus at the bus station.

Police believe Washington might still be on the run if not for the tipster, and they're grateful for every call like that one:

"The information that they have may be that final piece of the puzzle that really brings closure to an investigation and allows us to make an arrest and get the suspect off the streets," said Darrell DeBusk, with the Knoxville Police Department.

Washington is charged with first degree murder.

"It's a burden lifted, knowing that they're not still looking for him. That they have got him," said Virginia Humphrey, Miller's aunt.

The Humphreys said they can now focus on remembering the good times with Miller.

Washington is being held on $1,000,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is next Friday.

In August, a grand jury indicted Washington on aggravated assault, assault, domestic assault and evading arrest charges, which stemmed from an incident on Christmas Day 2011. A hearing on those charges is scheduled for July.
