KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville Police are on the hunt for two men after an attempted robbery and shooting early Sunday morning.

Their target, a taxicab.

Lamont Hardwick, with Fast Taxi Service, told Local 8 News he received a call from two men asking to be picked up from Prestwick Ridge Aparments on Sutherland Avenue.

Shortly after, a taxicab driver went on his way. But when he arrived, there were two guys waiting-- not for a ride-- but an opportunity.

"They flagged him down and got in the side doors, pulled a .45 automatic weapons and demanded his money," Hardwick said. "They tried to get him out of the car. Somehow he slipped back in the car and drove away. "

That's when Hardwick said the two men started shooting at the van.

"A few minutes later, I see him pull in here with both side doors open, bullet holes in the window and side of the vehicle," Hardwick said.

Hardwick said he doesn't think the suspects live at the apartment complex, which is only a few miles from Fast Taxi Service's office.

He said the suspects left emptyhanded, and is grateful the driver escaped with his life.

"He had his angels around him that night," Hardwick said.
