Crimetracker: Deputies charge woman for "football kicking" small dog

NEWPORT, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Jeffrey Shelton is still picking up his yard after Tonya Weathers created a huge mess on Sunday.

"I got home from church and she had started breaking my things up and had everything thrown outside - her clothes, my clothes, her stuff and half of my stuff -and half of it was broken, busted," said Shelton.

She threw out everything from food, to picture frames, a vacuum cleaner and even his kerosene heater.

"That I use for my emergency heat! And it was just demolished. Just thrown out and busted. Just ruined now," said Shelton.

Shelton said Weathers was homeless and he took her in about two months ago. He said she seemed okay, until this.

"I said, 'Well, you don't need to be breaking this stuff up because it's expensive to replace. What's wrong? Tell me what's wrong and stuff?' And then she goes and hits me," said Shelton.

Shelton called 911, and help arrived soon after.

Deputies started talking to Weathers and Shelton's long-haired Chiuhaua came towards her. According to the police report, that's when she football kicked the dog eight feet away from her.

Luckily, Shelton's dog Izzy is okay.

"She was playful shortly after that, after everything calmed down," he said.

Deputies charged Weathers with domestic assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and animal cruelty.

Shelton said he's glad it's over, but wishes Weathers hadn't destroyed pictures and other things he'll never be able to replace. He said she caused about $1,000 to his belongings.
