Fight over stolen cell phone leads to stabbing

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Knoxville man was taken to the hospital while another man is behind bars following an argument over a stolen cell phone late Monday night, according to the Knoxville Police Dept.

Melvin Bassett faces one count each of Aggravated Assault and Public Intoxication. He was arrested without incident after officers responded to a stabbing at an apartment complex, 1125 W. Scott Ave., shortly before 10:00 p.m.

The 43 year-old allegedly stabbed Hubert Latham, 54, during an altercation over a stolen cell phone. Latham was taken to Physicians Regional North hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
