Fire that killed McCreary County, Ky firefighter ruled arson

MCCREARY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/WVLT) -- Police say they've been investigating the cause of the August 30th fire, and now they say they have enough evidence to rule that it was intentionally set.

It’s news for a family still reeling from the loss of the 37-year-old firefighter.

“The wounds are still really fresh and the healing process is only just beginning,” said Greg Bird, the spokesperson for the Whitley City Fire Dept.

Bird says news that the fire that Arlie "Pooh" Hill ran into trying to save another life, yet that ultimately cost his own, was arson, has been hard to hear.

“It is a new hurt on top of an old hurt,” he said. The fire destroyed a home that officials learned was vacant, that a family had moved out of a week before the fire.

Police don’t have much to say about their evidence or if there are persons of interests or suspects, only to say the cause of the fire is arson.

“The only statement from the Whitley City Fire Department is that we ask and encourage anyone with information about this fire and any other fire to please contact the arson investigators at 1-800-27-ARSON,” said Bird.
