CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Friends, acquaintances and even strangers are mourning the death of a 27-year Chattanooga Police veteran who was killed on Saturday while responding to an armed robbery at a pawn shop.

Fifty-one-year-old Sgt. James Timothy Chapin died from a gunshot wound to the head.

On Sunday, the impact of that fatal shot could be felt around the city, from the Starbucks where he usually had a morning coffee, to his church, to the pawn shop, where strangers like JoAnn Cook came to leave flowers.

Cook told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that she could not believe something like this could happen in Chattanooga.

She brought a vase of daisies with a small American flag in it to the site of the shooting, saying she "just wanted to leave something."
