ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Guns, packages of cash and drugs are missing from the evidence room at the Asheville Police Department.

Auditors are tracking more than 14,000 evidence-room items involving cases as far back as 1993. The audit was started after the longtime evidence room manager resigned.

Investigators say more than 30 packets of money and valuables, 27 guns and 54 containers of drugs are unaccounted for.

The missing items could derail a number of criminal cases and delay court proceedings.

District attorney Ron Moore did not release the types of guns or drugs that are missing.

Nearly 400 oxycodone pills were discovered missing from the evidence room last month.
