BAXTER, Ky. (WVLT) -- Kentucky State Police say a man is charged with Torture of an Animal.

KSP says they received a call March 28 from a home on Little Shepherd Trail in Baxter. A woman claimed 48-year-old Rex Hinton wanted to kill himself.

Troopers say before they arrived, Hinton allegedly grabbed the family cat and threw it into a wood burning stove and slammed the door.

An ambulance took him to the Harlan Hospital for mental evaluation and medical treatment. After treatment, he was then taken to the Hazard Psychiatric Center.

On Tuesday, Hinton was released from Hazard Psychiatric Center and the arrest warrant was served.
