Hawkins Co. Sheriff: Deputy shoots sword-wielding man

CHURCH HILL, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Hawkins Co. Sheriff Ronnie Lawson says his deputies acted 'appropriately' when one of them shot a sword-wielding man in his chest on Tuesday.

Police reports indicate the deputies intended to serve Brandon Lee Laferty, 26, with a Sullivan Co. Warrant for Violation of Probation when they arrived at the Church Hill home, 298 Dykes Road. The probation reportedly stemmed from a conviction of Solicitation of Aggravated Sexual Battery.

Laferty has been rushed to Wellmont Hospital where he underwent immediate surgery. There's no further word on his condition.

According to Sheriff Lawson, when deputies arrived, they found Laferty in the back bedroom with a knife. They repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife, at which time Laferty allegedly grabbed a short blade sword. The deputies responded by firing pepper spray, hoping to disarm him. Saying he wasn't going back to prison for 10 years, Laferty lunged at a deputy who fired once and hit him in the chest.

Twenty-five year-old Megan Lyon, 4051 Skyland Drive in Kingsport, was arrested and charged with Felony False Report in connection with the incident. She is being held at Hawkins Co. Jail.

The deputies have been placed on administrative leave, Sheriff Lawson said, adding that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and District Attorney General's Office have been asked to conduct an independent investigation.
