Jury convicts mother in death of toddler daughter

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Nashville woman has been convicted in the overdose death of her young daughter, giving her an automatic life prison sentence.

The Davidson County jury returned the verdict Thursday, finding 33-year-old Jennifer Elizabeth Hannah guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated child neglect and giving controlled substances to a minor.

Earlier Thursday, Hannah testified that she didn't know who gave her 16-month-old daughter Ava Hannah a fatal combination of prescription drugs, according to The Tennessean.

An autopsy found the toddler died of an acute overdose of painkillers and anxiety medicine. Traces of the medication were found in a sippy cup Hannah prepared for the child the day she died in 2008.

The defense honed in on Hannah's husband Michael Hannah and his involvement with drugs. Michael Hannah committed suicide in 2009.
