Knox man testifies invasion suspect smiled as shot

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Knox County man whose son and girlfriend were killed in a violent home invasion has testified the suspect he fatally shot smiled at him.

Layron "Larry" Doyal took the stand Monday in the felony murder trial of the other invasion suspect, Benjamin Keith Fowler.

Doyal said he had shot 20-year-old Ronald Carter III and Carter was on the floor, wounded, with Doyal's gun in his face when he smiled while groping at his waist band as though feeling for a second gun, according to The Associated Press. Doyal said he fired another bullet into Carter's head.

The intruders killed 31-year-old Robert Sanders Doyal and 63-year-old Judy Adams. Prosecutors say Carter and Fowler were after legally prescribed drugs.

Defense attorney Mike Whalen said Carter was "pill-sick" and was solely responsible.
