Life sentence for cocaine trafficking conviction

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A man convicted along with six co-defendants in a federal cocaine trafficking case in East Tennessee has been sentenced to life in prison.

A statement from the U.S. attorney's office said 38-year-old Sunnah Maddox of Utica, N.Y., and Johnson City was sentenced Monday.

The statement said Maddox by phone directed a "green light" on a co-defendant he believed had cooperated with investigators. An FBI specialist who analyzed coded conversations testified the "green light" was an order to kill or cause serious bodily harm to the person.

Maddox and others recruited couriers to transport kilograms of cocaine and money from Johnson City to Atlanta, Florida, and New York.

US Attorney Bill Killian said those already sentenced have "received and deserved the most serious punishment that the federal justice system can provide."
