MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A jury has convicted a gang member on a charge of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a security guard who tried to break up a fight at a Memphis mall.

The Commercial Appeal reports that 21-year-old Terrell Loverson had faced a first-degree murder charge but the jury convicted him Friday on the lesser charge.

The security guard, 28-year-old Marques Rainey, was shot once in the chest when he tried to break up a gang fight on Feb. 27, 2010.

Prosecutor Ray Lepone told jurors that the former Marine was just trying to do his job when he was shot.

Loverson's lawyers argued that he shot out of fear with no premeditation, which is required for a first-degree murder conviction.

Loverson faces 15 to 25 years in prison at sentencing next month.
