Johnson City man arrested 8 years to the day after incident

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Carter County Sheriff's investigators have arrested a man charged with assaulting an officer eight years to the day after the attack occurred.

Gary L. Barnett of Johnson City was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault on an officer, evading and resisting arrest and criminal impersonation.

The Johnson City Press reported Sheriff's Sgt. Kenny Cornett came upon a stalled vehicle on Highway 19E on Sept. 27, 2003. He stopped and helped the driver push it to the side of the highway and the man asked for a ride.

The name he gave didn't check out and a Social Security number he used showed up for a Chattanooga woman.

When Cornett tried to arrest the man, he shoved the officer and ran. The stalled car was stolen.
