WHITESBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- Hamblen County Sheriff's deputies have arrested more than 30 people at a cockfighting ring near Whitesburg.
Sheriff Esco Jarnagin says deputies staked out the area after getting a tip about the chicken fighting operation.
Jarnagin says when participants saw the deputies closing in on Sunday afternoon, they broke and ran, according to the Associated Press. More than 30 people were in custody and some of them were children.
In addition to cockfighting charges, Jarnagin said any adults who brought children to the fights would be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The sheriff says cockfighting is cruel and it saddens him to see the dead roosters.
