Nashville doctor accused of leaving newborn for dead

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A lawsuit has been filed against a Robertson County doctor who delivered a baby that was left for dead in a plastic bin until a nurse noticed he was alive.

The suit filed this week against John O'Donnell III at NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield says the infant was born "with irregular gasping breaths and heart rate" and that "O'Donnell decided on his own ... that the baby had no chance of living," according to The Tennessean.

After being placed in the bin, a nurse who passed by the area a few hours later noticed the baby was gasping for breath.

The baby was transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for specialized care.

The lawsuit claims the infant suffered a brain injury and other injuries because of the doctor's negligence.

Officials at NorthCrest Medical Center said O'Donnell no longer works there.
