Nashville police officer indicted in drug case

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A federal grand jury has indicted a Metro Nashville Police officer, accusing him of taking money to aid drug dealers.

Richard Wilson was arrested on Wednesday immediately after the indictment was returned, charging him with cocaine distribution, money laundering and federal program fraud.

The 31-year-old Wilson is accused of taking more than $24,000 from people he thought were drug traffickers. The indictment alleges Wilson carried what he believed to be cocaine and drug money five times since April 5 -- three of them while in uniform and driving a police car.

In a news release cited by The Tennessean, U.S. Attorney Jerry Martin said Metro Police Chief Steve Anderson called in the FBI to help investigate when allegations surfaced.

Court-appointed defense attorney Charles Buckholts cited federal court rules in declining comment on Thursday.
