McMinn County deputies shoot, kill crime suspect

ATHENS, Tenn. (AP) -- McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy says his deputies followed protocol in fatally shooting a suspect who drew a handgun.

The shooting on Monday occurred as two deputies were trying to serve warrants on 37-year-old Allan Shepherd and his wife, Leah Shepherd. Both were being charged with theft over $60,000 in a suspected auto chop shop operation, according to The Daily Post-Athenian.

Guy said Allan Shepherd bolted into the woods with the deputies in pursuit.

Guy said Shepherd was armed with two handguns and it was not immediately determined whether he had fired either one. Both deputies were placed on routine administrative leave. The TBI is investigating the shooting in which neither deputy was injured.

Leah Shepherd was arrested and booked into the McMinn County Jail in Athens.
