Smokies pitcher injured in early morning hit and run

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Tennessee Smokies pitcher and UT Alum was sent to UT Medical Center early Friday morning after police say he was hit by a car and left lying in the road.

According to police, Ty'Relle Harris was walking in the parking lot of behind the Tin Roof on Cumberland Ave. shortly before 3:00 a.m. when he was hit by a black Cadillac driven by David C. Wilder. Wilder then allegedly took off leaving Harris lying there, where officers found him.

Wilder was later arrested and charged with Leaving the Scene, Vehicular Assault, and DUI.

A release from the Tennessee Smokies and its parent club, the Chicago Cubs, described Harris' injuries as serious, but not life threatening. They added Harris was fortunate not to be hurt worse, but did not offer any other information out of concern for the pitcher's privacy.

The clubs also said that since the situation was now a legal matter, they had no further comment.
