Police: Woman claims robbery, tries to sell painkillers

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A 63-year-old grandmother in Clarksville has been charged with falsely claiming someone robbed her of her prescription pills, but police say an investigation found that she was trying to sell her medicine for cash.

Police said in a news release Monday that Bessie Ann Bryant initially told police that a man took a bottle of pills from her on Friday and threatened to shoot up the house if she called police. But police said there was no robbery and instead Bryant tried to sell her painkillers for $400.

Police said the unidentified buyer, who was armed, was short on cash so he gave her $300 and took the pills, but Bryant later concocted a story that she had been robbed. Police said the man never pointed his gun at her.
