MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Students acting suspiciously caught the attention of a Shelby County school resource officer, who then found a gun in a student's backpack.
A statement by the sheriff's office said the incident occurred just after lunch on Thursday in the Southwind High School cafeteria.
The officer asked a 16-year-old boy to empty his backpack and the student tried to run, but was caught. A search of the backpack revealed a 40-caliber pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition.
The student was charged with carrying a weapon on school property and was taken to the Juvenile Detention Facility.
