KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- UPDATE: Erik Osborne called 911 Tuesday threatening to kill himself and responding sheriff's deputies. To prove it, he fired at least five shots. "Well I was freaking out. I didn't know what to think. I didn't know what got him upset," said Randall French, Osborne's step-dad. He said the SWAT team called him to say there was trouble at home.

"I just had got off the phone with the sheriff's department. He called me and was upset and told me he was going to kill himself," said French. He thinks Erik was distraught over an argument with his girlfriend. He didn't have to go far looking for tools of death.

"I have guns here, but I never thought he would do anything like that. I had no idea," French said.

Said KCSO spokeswoman Martha Dooley, "he left a .22 rifle and a spear gun in the house," and surrendered. French gave us Erik's state probation ID card. He says his troubled step-son was also linked to a recent Facebook threat targetting Central High School. "Somehow he was involved, or questioned about it. That's all I know."

Osborne was taken by deputies for mental evaluation. Criminal charges could follow.
