Crimetracker: Scam Alert! Be on the lookout for too good to be true phone calls

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn.(WVLT)--The Knox County Sheriff’s Office says people are calling around saying you may have won a lot of cash.

Here's how it works, the caller asks you to supply him or her with a money order, to wire money, or to place funds on a prepaid card and then supply him or her with the card’s code. They say that the money you are paying is for taxes, legal fees, or transportation of the prize.

Do not agree to meet with anyone who tells you have won a prize. These individuals are not local, but want you to believe that they are in the area with your prize.

If you receive a similar call, the KCSO strongly encourages you to make contact with the caller’s alleged company for verification.

Companies will not ask you for anything if you have truly won a prize.
Knox County has experienced an increase in calls from individuals claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House.

If you receive such a call, Publishers Clearing House asks you contact their fraud department at 1-800-645-9242, option 5. The KCSO can be reached at (865) 215-2243.
