KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - A registered sex offender has been sentenced after pleading guilty to changing a child's birth certificate to show he was the father.
Don Allen Coleman, 37, was in a Knox County court on Monday.
Coleman was arrested in November 2012 after an investigation by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Registry Enforcement Unit.
Under state law Coleman, who was convicted of aggravated sexual battery of a 9-year old, cannot live with a child that is not his biological child and cannot be a step parent. By changing the birth certificate to reflect he was the biological father, he would have been permitted under state law to reside with the child.
Under his plea agreement, Coleman was given a suspended sentence and his name removed from the birth certificate.
Coleman also has a trial date set for January 30, 2014 to hear 8 additional violations of the sex offender registry and perjury cases.
