KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--An eyewitness says, "A man stole a truck parked over there on Market Square.
He drove the truck down in front of all the stores, then hopped the curb and drove down a one way road the wrong way."
It happened Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Market Square in Downtown Knoxville.
Market Square turns into a farmers market on Wednesdays.
They pitch tents and park right on the square.
The owner of the truck was distraught and confused after someone stole his truck right in front of him and a group of people.
Jason Cotner says, "I saw a guy. He came up the sidewalk, turned up over the curb. He just missed my truck and swerved over the curb. He almost hit the fire extinguisher and then took off down the street."
The truck owner told police he was loading his truck when the man hopped in the driver's side and drove right through Market Square.
Market Square worker Brad Fowler says, "I have no clue what he was thinking. He was honking his horn when kids and everything are walking around."
And almost hitting several workers.
Fowler says, "Out of nowhere we heard beeping real loud. We saw a truck run up the curb and it about took out a couple people. And it was pretty scary."
Fowler got a quick glimpse of the getaway man.
Fowler says, "It was an older white guy. I'd say mid 40s white like a pepper kinda hair facial hair and from what I was told he was wearing an eye patch as well."
Jason Cotner is a truck driver down here 3 days a week.
Cotner says, "This is usually my parking spot. It just so happens I almost got smashed today."
But he's lucky and so are others that the speeding truck didn't run over anyone.
Police are looking for a 2002 gold Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
