TBI reports hate crimes, officer assaults down

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Both the number of reported hate crimes and the number of assaults on law enforcement officers are down in new figures released for Tennessee.

Statistics released on Thursday by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation show hate crimes were down 20 percent in 2010 from the previous year and 55 percent since 2008.

The number of officers assaulted in the line of duty decreased by 11 percent in 2010 to 1,828.

About 75 serious injuries were reported from those incidents. That does not mean there were 75 victims, since more than one type of injury can be listed for each incident.

No officer last year was intentionally killed by another person. TBI does not track accidental deaths.
